Prices and Speeds of Russian Trains
Solution As of March 2006 if you buy the tickets directly at a train station (that's the cheapest way), you are most likely to pay the prices listed below (ONE WAY!).

However, the prices change often and fluctutions can be anything from 20% in any direction. If you buy tickets through travel agents, expect a markup of 10% to 50% (you are more likely to get a higher markup on cheap tickets, and lower markup on more expensive tickets).

Moscow - St. Peterburg Fast Train (4.5-5.5 hours): $80-$103 (seater)

Moscow - St. Petersburg Overnight "Firmenny" (better) Train (8 hours): $70 2nd class sleeper, $130 1st class sleeper

Moscow - St. Petersburg Overnight "Normal" Train (8 hours): $55 2nd class, $20 3rd class (common carriage sleeper)

Moscow - Novosibirsk "Firmenny" (better) Train (48 hours): $400 1st class, $180 2nd class, $70 3rd class

Moscow - Novosibirsk "Normal" Train (48 hours): $130 2nd class, $50 3rd class

Moscow - Irkutsk "Firmenny" Train (77 hours): $400-$500 1st class, $210-$250 2nd class, $80 3rd class

Moscow - Irkutsk "Normal" Train (87 hours): $160-$180 1st class, $70 3rd class

Moscow - Beijing (144 hours): $400-$500 1st class, $200-$250 2nd class

Moscow - Volgograd (south Russia - 18 to 21 hours): $150 1st class, $65-$75 2nd class, $30 3rd class

Moscow - Ekaterinburg "Firmenny" train (25 hours): $180-$220 1st class, $100-$120 2nd class

Moscow - Ekaterinburg "Normal" train (25 hours): $70-$80 2nd class, $30 3rd class

Moscow - Kazan train (12 hours): $100-$115 1st class, $45-$55 2nd class, $20 3rd class

The other prices are relatively easy to calculate. Generally, we're talking about $8 for 1 hour of journey in 1st class, $4 for 1 hour of journey in 2nd class, and about $2 for 1 hour of journey for 3rd class. But not less than $60 / $30 / $15 respectively for a journey. This is not really precise but gives an idea. Of course, fast, luxury, and any other "special" or popular trains don't count, because their tariffs are defined using other parameters as well.
