What Trains are Like in Russia?
Solution Surprise, surprise: they are very safe (police on duty in each train, conductor in each carriage, every passenger has the passport check before entering the train).

The cleaniness depends on what train you take. There are two types: standard and "firmenny" (operated by a company=firm). The first is a bit cheaper, the second is a bit cleaner and nicer. Comparing to the overnight trains in Europe, like UK or France, Russian "firmenny" trains are just a bit less clean. The problem areas are the toilets and passages between carriages where it gets simply filthy, and it might be a bit stuffy in the compartment, but that's about it, really. Also, you get 4, not 6-bed compartments, bedsheets, nice old-style interior, and radio at your compartment. Showers on some long-distance trains.
If you are talking about seater trains, Moscow - St. Petersburg are as clean, but for all other routes it's not very nice.
Long-distance trains for obvious reasons (6 days on the road) tend to get a bit dirtier, but they are cleaned daily by staff and by the 3rd day you get so used, it doesn't matter anymore.

There's much more info available at our Russian Trains Guide.
